RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
