Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
